We had so much fun celebrating soprano Angela Gheorghiu’s Birthday!
The Metropolitan Opera’s Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin conducts the entire MET Orchestra in a Verdi “La Traviata” and “Happy Birthday” mashup, arranged by MET Principal Horn Erik Ralske.
The idea to celebrate Ms. Gheorghiu was hatched by MET Hornist Barbara Jostlein Currie when she remembered how the soprano went above and beyond in her support of the MET Orchestra Musicians during the pandemic. Ms. Gheorghiu not only hosted our February “MET Orchestra Spotlight Series” concert, but she sang with us from Bucharest, organizing the entire concert in the beautiful Romanian Atheneum. Everyone in Bucharest, from Ms. Gheorghiu, to her pianist Alexandru Petrovici, to the lighting team and the audio engineers gave their time voluntarily.
Because of this beautiful concert, we were able to raise a significant amount of money for our MET Orchestra Musicians in need, and most importantly, she gave us hope during one of the darkest times of the Orchestra. We thank you Angela for your beautiful voice, your spirit and your dedication to Opera and the musicians!
