Jennifer Johnson, Librarian

Jennifer Johnson joined the Metropolitan Opera Music Library in 2008. Prior to her arrival in New York, she worked as Assistant Principal Librarian with the Minnesota Orchestra, Assistant Librarian with the Houston Symphony, Staff Librarian with The Philadelphia Orchestra, and Company Manager for the American Repertory Theater. Ms. Johnson has also worked with Spoleto Festival USA, Music Academy of the West, American Russian Young Artists Orchestra, Youth Orchestra of the Americas, and many other ensembles in the U.S. and abroad.

While studying trombone at the Peabody Conservatory, Ms. Johnson was introduced to music library work by Mary Plaine, Principal Librarian of the Baltimore Symphony, who then sent her to study with Clinton F. Nieweg, Principal Librarian (now retired) of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Since then, she has assisted Mr. Nieweg with the editing of the Nieweg Performing Editions (formerly The Philadelphia Orchestra Corrected Editions), published by Edwin F. Kalmus, and has written articles for Notes: the Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association, Insights and Essays on the Music Performance Library (Girsberger/Lake), The American Harp Journal, and other publications.

Ms. Johnson graduated cum laude with a B.A. in political science from Bryn Mawr College, where she was the recipient of departmental honors and the Felix Frankfurter Prize for Constitutional Law. She is happily married to Met Opera bassoonist Daniel Shelly, following a courtship that began in the orchestra pit.
